Shutters with shutters

Tailored or custom-made, indoor or outdoor, shuttered shutters play with light and create the décor.

The louver

This is a component composed of horizontal blades inclined and assembled in a frame stiffened by brackets. Depending on the spacing of the blades, the light filters more or less.
There are several variations: the American shutters (very tight blades allowing a concealment close to full shutters), the shutters Nice (with a moving part), shutters (adjustable blades) and mixed models (blinds only in the upper part).

1. Outside or inside?

On the facade, the shutter dresses the openings and completes the action of the joinery in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation. It is also a major element in terms of security and delay of burglary. The louvered models are available in all ranges of materials (wood, PVC and lacquered aluminum), standard or custom.

The choice must then be guided by the type of opening, the style of the window or the climate. It can also be imposed by the local urban plan (PLU), when the municipality wishes to preserve the architectural unit or the historical character of a city or a village. If the facade does not lend itself to it or when the house is subject to strict architectural rules, the shutters can also be installed indoors. They are imperatively made of wood: oak, northern fir, exotic wood, even red cedar.

Recover: Things to Know Before You Buy

- The flatness of the wing is essential, a veiled surface being impossible to straighten. Tilt the leaf at the height of the face. From each corner, look diagonally from top to bottom to see if the panel is curved or bored.
- The subsidence of the uprights and sleepers is repairable if the joints are not dislocated by worming or rot. A carpenter can easily tighten the elements, glue them and put back the set square.
- Worm wounds do not hinder resistance if they are not only localized to assemblies. The surface of the wood must be hard. The sounding of tapping or slight twisting of the leaf makes it possible to evaluate the strength of the leaf. In short, avoid the elements whose assemblies are roughly repaired with nails, assemblies filled with wood pulp and sound hollow, and shutters with metal brackets reported at each angle. Finally, never buy shutters stored outdoors and exposed to the sun and weather.

2. Custom or recovery?

When the exterior joinery has dimensions out of standard or that one wishes interior blinds in harmony with the decoration, the made-to-measure is the ideal option. Made by a craftsman, the interior shutters can adopt a classic style (in accordance with the existing woodwork) or contemporary (simply lacquered MDF panels, etc.). In general, the interior louvers allow more desirable assemblies and patterns than the models intended for the exterior: two or more vertical hinged wings folding along the seals, sliding panels, etc.

In contrast, the louvers of recovery often involve a major work of resizing or even restoration (replacement of hardware, stripping and wood treatment, etc.). In addition, the complexity of their assemblies makes them fragile, especially if they have been exposed to moisture and bad weather. In short, it is a question of being vigilant and choosing an affordable model, which can be easily adapted and requires only a summary restoration. In all cases, it should be noted that an interior shutter will protect much less against the cold or intrusions that a shutter installed outside.
